The Legend of Huma - My Favorite Dragonlance Book
The Legend of Huma by Richard A. Knaak has always been my favorite Dragonlance book. Where Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman set the stage with the Chronicles Trilogy and Legends Trilogy books, there was something special about The Legend of Huma.
The Legend of Huma is the story about the famous knight Huma Dragonbane who during the Third Dragon War fought against the evil goddess Takhisis and her armies, long before the War of the Lance in the Chronicles Trilogy. This story was unique for the Dragonlance Saga because it was an all-in-one epic book with large scale battles including the Knights of Solamnia, good and evil dragons of various colors, and wizard battles with white and red robed mages versus black robed mages AND renegade mages. At a personal level, the book focused on Huma’s relationships with his unlikely companion Kaz the Minotaur, his childhood friend and renegade mage Magius (of the Staff of Magius fame), and his tragic love story with Gwyneth. The book explored the impact of war on the countryside and villages, the spread of plague and disease, and the silent workings of other gods in the pantheon besides Paladine and Takhisis. Even though we roughly knew the outcome of Huma’s final battle with Takhisis in other Dragonlance books, it was the story’s journey made it my favorite book in the entire Dragonlance Saga. Also, the cover art by Jeff Easley was excellent!
